Work modes — Plan Mode and more
Claude Code can work in different modes. A mode determines how autonomously Claude is allowed to act — from individual approval to independent execution. Plan Mode is the recommended approach for most tasks.
Work modes at a glance
-
Normal Mode — The default
Claude asks for permission before every action: “May I read this file?”, “May I run this command?”. You retain full control — ideal for getting started.
-
Plan Mode — Think first, then act
Claude works like an architect: first a complete plan is created, then you review and approve it. Only after your approval does execution begin. Recommended for most tasks.
-
Auto-Accept Mode — The trust mode
Claude executes actions without asking each time. For dangerous actions (like deleting files), it still asks. Saves time on routine tasks.
Why Plan Mode?
Without structure, Claude gets lost in details on complex tasks. Plan Mode prevents this: Claude describes the task, researches the current state, creates a plan with all steps — and you approve it before anything happens. Activate with Shift+Tab or simply say: “Enter Plan Mode.”
How Plan Mode works
Four phases for controlled, traceable results.
-
Analysis
Claude examines the task, actively researches (reads files, queries APIs, checks configurations), and gathers all necessary information.
-
Planning and approval
Claude creates a detailed plan and presents it for approval. You can adjust the plan before execution begins — no surprises.
-
Execution
Claude works through the steps — with status updates and progress display. When unexpected problems arise, Claude pauses and informs rather than improvising on its own.
-
Review
Before completion, Claude checks the results against the original plan. Every step is documented — what was planned, executed, and decided.
Advanced capabilities
-
Parallel helpers (subagents)
For complex projects, Claude starts multiple helpers simultaneously: one checks the configuration, one researches the documentation, one analyzes the workflow. Claude then consolidates the results.
-
Background tasks
Claude can handle longer tasks in the background while you continue working. Handy for extensive analyses or research.
